In John 4, Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman is itself a Purim-style reversal the rejected becomes chosen, the overlooked becomes entrusted, and the outsider becomes the first to hear a clear declaration of Messiah. What the enemy intended as division and shame is overturned by divine initiative and grace. Like Purim, where Haman’s decree of death was reversed into life and celebration, this moment at the well marks a turning point where ancient hostility is broken and a new decree of mercy is released. In a year of digging wells, Jesus does not merely uncover hidden pain; He releases living water from an ancient well, reopening spiritual inheritance that had been buried by conflict and religion. As with Isaac’s wells and Esther’s decree, what had been stopped up is reopened resulting in revival, harvest, and a reformation of worship “in spirit and in truth.”
